Where to stay in Fuvahmulah: a diver’s guide

Fuvahmulah has no resorts, only locally run guesthouses on a small island. Where you stay makes a real difference to early dive mornings, meals and how relaxed your trip feels. Here’s how to choose.

What kind of accommodation is there?

Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll in the far south of the Maldives, about 4.5 km long and just over 1 km wide. It’s a local, inhabited island, so instead of resorts you’ll find small guesthouses run by island families and dive operators.

That’s part of the charm. You stay close to real island life, prices are far lower than resort islands, and your hosts usually know the dive centres, boat crews and restaurants personally.

What divers should look for

  • Distance to the harbour. Tiger shark dives start early and the boats leave from the harbour at the south-east tip of the island. The closer you are, the more sleep you get.
  • Distance to the airport. The airport is also on the south-east side. Being close makes arrival day and your no-fly day before departure much easier.
  • Meals sorted. There’s a good handful of cafés and restaurants, but after three dives you won’t want to hunt for dinner. A guesthouse that can arrange full board saves time.
  • Dive arrangements. Ask whether the guesthouse books your dives with a trusted dive centre and plans your days around the boat schedule.
  • The basics done well. Air conditioning, hot water, a good bed and somewhere to rinse and dry your gear.

Which part of the island?

The island is small, so nothing is far. Even so, the area you choose shapes your days.

Our tip: if you’re coming for the diving, stay in the south-east. You can easily reach Thoondu and the lakes by taxi or bike on a non-diving afternoon.

Good to know before you book

  • Local island customs. Fuvahmulah is a Muslim island. Alcohol is not available, and visitors are asked to dress modestly. There is no bikini beach on Fuvahmulah yet, so on public beaches swim in modest clothing such as shorts and a T-shirt or rash guard.
  • Getting around. Taxis are cheap and quick, and many visitors rent a bicycle or scooter. Your guesthouse can arrange airport and harbour transfers.
  • Cash. Bring some US dollars or Maldivian rufiyaa for small cafés and shops.
  • Getting here. Fly from Malé, or via Gan in Addu. See our guide to getting to Fuvahmulah.

Common questions

Are there resorts in Fuvahmulah?

No. Fuvahmulah is a local inhabited island, so accommodation is in guesthouses. Most are small and family-run.

Which area is best for tiger shark diving?

The south-east, near the harbour where the dive boats leave. Scuba Haven is 2 minutes away, so early dives are easy.

How many nights should I stay?

Most divers stay 4 to 8 nights. You usually can’t dive on arrival day, and you need a no-fly interval before your domestic flight home. Our packages are built around both. See also the best time to dive Fuvahmulah.

Can non-divers stay too?

Of course. Non-divers can enjoy the beaches, the lakes, snorkelling and island life while their partner dives. Ask us about a room-only or breakfast stay.

Can I learn to dive while I’m there?

Yes. We arrange PADI courses from Open Water upwards. See our PADI courses.
