Best time to dive Fuvahmulah
Tiger sharks are here every month of the year. What changes is the weather, the visibility and which other big animals are around. Here’s how the year usually looks.
The short answer
- Tiger sharks: year-round, daily.
- Calmest seas and best visibility: usually January to April.
- Schooling hammerheads: best chance roughly October to April.
- Oceanic mantas and whale sharks: most often reported in the first half of the year, especially around March to May.
- Thresher sharks: seen year-round, usually on early-morning dives.
Month by month
| Months | Conditions | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Jan – Apr | Dry north-east monsoon; generally calmer seas and the best visibility of the year | Tiger sharks, threshers, hammerhead season, whale sharks, oceanic mantas building toward a March–May peak |
| May – Sep | South-west monsoon; more wind, rain and swell on some days, fewer visitors | Tiger sharks and threshers as usual, quieter dive sites, good value |
| Oct – Dec | Transition back to the dry season; conditions improving | Tiger sharks, threshers, hammerhead season starting |
Sightings of wild animals are never guaranteed, and seasons shift from year to year. This is a general guide based on local dive-center reports.
Does the weather stop the diving?
Rarely for long. Fuvahmulah has no lagoon, so the ocean is right off the reef and dive boats reach the sites in minutes. On rough days, the dive centers move to more sheltered sites or change the timing.
Our advice
If tiger sharks are the main goal, come whenever suits you. If you also want hammerheads, mantas and the best visibility, aim for January to April and book early, because it’s the busiest time of year. For more flexibility and better value, May to September works well.
